It’s often hard to recognise, because it doesn’t look like a “polarity problem” – it looks like the everyday friction of mismatched personalities and attachment styles. Or the kind of low-grade resentment that can seep into long-term relationships or prolonged unsuccessful dating. But once you can see it, you can do something about it.

Some signs of reverse polarity in a relationship or in dating:

Constantly feeling frustrated and resentful towards your partner or dating partners. They “should” be different.

You feel burdened or oppressed, unappreciated, and not free to be yourself.

You are doubting the relationship and being attracted elsewhere, even though you deeply love each other.

You are dating people who seem nice or good, but leave you disinterested and unexcited.

Sex is non-existent or minimal, and feels functional or even boring.

What is reverse polarity?

Reverse polarity happens when the natural polarity between masculine and feminine becomes reversed. He takes on more of the She role than is natural to him, and She takes on more of the He role than is natural to her.

This isn’t the same as him exploring his feminine side, or her enjoying her masculine side – that’s healthy range. Reverse polarity is when this tips into both people occupying the space of the other’s essence, unconsciously and consistently. The magnets start repelling instead of attracting.

Between a couple who are naturally mostly masculine and feminine essence, when the polarity reverses, she becomes the one who is directive, protecting, financially driving, mission-orientated, calling the shots. He becomes the one who is receptive, emotional, going with the flow of life and feeling – and increasingly self-doubting.

She ends up prodding him into action, because he seems slow to move or grow or even take responsibility. He wants her to slow down and leave him alone. He feels less purposeful; she feels more anxious and responsible for both of them. The love may still be there, but it’s clouded.

They are not living their natural essence in the relationship. If they were happy to naturally occupy these energies, whatever their gender, thats a different story’

It’s not really about who does what task – it’s about what energy each of you is holding.

If you’re occupying an energy, masculine or feminine, your partner will often shift naturally into complementary polarity with it – or they’ll fight it. Its good to know that a woman can be highly capable in traditionally masculine tasks, or a man in traditionally feminine ones, and the couple can still hold strong polarity, if they know how to generate it. Polarity is created energetically, not just divided up by tasks or roles.

What causes reverse polarity?

Financial imbalance – she earns considerably more, carries him financially or supports him while he’s home full-time or pursuing his own path – and it isn’t a conscious, mutual choice.

Career setbacks, job loss, or illness disrupt the natural flow, and she picks up the slack. Something neither partner controls – but polarity can still be consciously maintained through it.

Not understanding the positive differences between masculine and feminine essence, so the couple drifts out of polarity or keeps taking over each other’s space.

He keeps trying to please her and denies his own needs and masculine energy to keep the peace.

She’s scared to let go into her feelings, be alive in her body and surrender into flow.

Earlier trauma, wounding, or a parent who modelled an undesirable aspect of their essence – leaving a need to protect around your own essence and shy away from living it fully.

How to restore polarity

Restoring polarity means each of you reclaiming your natural energy in intimacy, not defaulting into an unfulfilling opposite.

If you have a core feminine essence and you’ve been the one directing, managing, deciding, carrying him, and feeling burdened or resentful about it – step back energetically. Give your partner room to step up. Stop managing his emotions, decisions, and healing, and trust him to find his own way, even if he hasn’t yet. Hand back to him what is his to take care of and let him experience the consequences of not doing that. You are still loving and supporting him, just not over-functioning in his domain.

If you’ve been the one going along, deferring, staying passive, pleasing her and resenting it – step in. Give more direction, take real responsibility (including for money), initiate plans, especially for intimacy, and stop waiting to be prompted. Don’t ask “What can I do to help?” as this makes her the manager.

Whichever way it’s running: reconnect with what’s truly authentic to you, spend time with others who hold that essence well. And practice new possibilities.

The hard part

What happens if she steps back and he doesn’t pick it up?

A vacuum calls us to fill it, and it’s deeply tempting for her to go back to managing him – his emotions, his decisions, his social life – the moment you notice him not stepping into the space you’ve made.

If this happens, the move isn’t to fill the gap again. It’s to encourage him to find support elsewhere – other men, a men’s group, a therapist – and if he still doesn’t shift, consciously decide: am I willing to carry this, or not?

What’s often true is this: when you shift something internally – genuinely let go – the whole field of the relationship changes. The other person is far more likely to rise into the space you’ve vacated than if you never really vacated it at all.

What happens if he steps up and she doesn’t relax her masculine energy?

The dynamic can run the other way too – where he’s occupying more of the flowing, emotional, relational aspects, and she’s polarised into the masculine, driving and directing. The same principle applies: give her time to find her feminine essence and trust you again. It won’t happen overnight. When he steps back into more direction and steadiness, she’ll find her way into more flow.

Our patterns run deep and they are often formed because of a perceived or real need to protect ourselves. It can be scary to change, however the risk of letting reverse polarity wreck your love-life and your intimacy is a greater risk than getting out of your comfort zone to have more of what you are deeply longing for.

In my experience even a small shift towards authentic polarity makes a very big difference in levels of happiness and fulfilment in yourself and your relationships.

If you’re single or dating

Reverse polarity doesn’t need a relationship to show up – it can happen on a single date. Here you can choose not to fill the reversed role from the start.

For those more masculine in essence: you can maintain polarity by centring into your own core rather than matching her masculine energy. Don’t fight it, and don’t give in to it either — just stay rooted in yourself. Humour is one of the most useful tools here; it de-escalates without collapsing your ground.

More feminine in essence: stay in your own flow and feeling instead of taking over the planning, the direction, the reassurance – even when someone seems to need you to. Many men have become wary of showing their authentic masculine leadership as they assume it will not be welcome. But when given with care and sensitivity to her, it’s very welcome to the feminine essence.

Either way: notice when you’re about to occupy someone else’s space, and don’t.

It can be challenging to shift reverse polarity – there are usually real reasons you ended up occupying the other space, and it may be uncomfortable to even admit what’s happening.

But the rewards are significant. When natural polarity is restored, tension eases and magnetic love returns. Whether you’re partnered or dating, you’ll notice you start attracting different people, and feel more authentic, aligned, and happier – with access to the kind of polarity that makes for a genuinely alive connection.

If you recognise this pattern in your relationship or dating life, it’s not something you have to untangle alone. This is exactly the work I do in sessions and private intensives — helping people see where the reversal is happening and consciously restore polarity, often faster than expected. Book a single session to explore this dynamic or learn more about private intensives →

Remove one of these ingredients and it just doesn’t quite work.

An energetic pull that draws you together

1. Attraction is central to all our relationships. There is sexual attraction with our intimate partners, the spark of masculine and feminine opposites. In dating we simply want to see someone again. In friendships we like someone, we are drawn to them. At work, we have colleagues we prefer to be with, teams we want to be part of, a culture or creativity that attract us. Here we thrive. Even our pets are likable, lovable or just quirkily attractive to us.

Trying to be in an intimate relationship without attraction is a forced affair. It is a struggle that never fully goes away. There may be a huge amount of love, but if attraction is absent, it devolves more into companionship.

And I’m not just talking about physical attraction, but an energetic pull that draws you together, often in spite of physical preferences. ‘He’s not my usual type but I just want to be around him…’

Attraction in intimacy will ebb and flow over time, but how much depends on your commitment to keeping passion and love alive. As one of the 3 Traits of great relationships it is important!

Sharing core values and dreams

2. Alignment is also a major key to great relationships. If we are not sharing core values and dreams it is difficult to sustain an attraction. For example, if you are a man in your early forties and you really want to have a family, you may be extremely attracted to your girlfriend, but if she does not want children it’s not going to work. Or if you need monogamy and your partner needs an open relationship, your opposing desires for safety and freedom are not aligned.

You are pulling in opposite directions.

Or if your dream is to live and work in a cosmopolitan city, and your partner is miserable unless they are in the bush, the attraction will likely lessen under the strain of the non-alignment. Compromises can be made, but it’s not easy when they are big ones. But the plus is that you can discover new things through your partner.

In a work team, it is often more invigorating to have different points of view. But only when you are all aligned in service to a common goal or project.

Friendships can drift apart when not bound by a common interest, location, political leanings, shared sports, life-styles. Sometimes though, the heart alignment is stronger than these factors and the friendship endures all kinds of changes.

In intimate relationships an alignment of your sexual flavours and preferences makes it easier to flow together in love making. If one partner is very light and romantic and the other is more kinky and darker this can be fearful for one and boring for the other.

When we are authentic others can trust us

3. Authenticity creates trust, an essential for all good and strong relationships, intimate or otherwise. Being real and essentially yourself is being authentic. When we are authentic others can trust us because we do not have secrets or hidden motives. We are not projecting false identities over our true essence, or manipulating to get love and attention. We are vulnerable in the best kind of way.

If we commit to another from our authentic selves we will naturally keep our commitments and follow through. This builds the trust, which creates a container for attraction and love to grow and flourish. Authenticity is not about forcing our ‘truth’ onto another or being ‘honest’ in a way that hurts others unnecessarily. It is being true to ourselves and living love to others.

Authenticity is exciting, an aphrodisiac. It can bring back lost attraction or make it very clear if its not going to work.

If you are not able to be your authentic self in a relationship that is not healthy and needs to change.

Small amounts of awareness can go a long way

And there is a 4th A, the overarching aspect of Awareness. Connecting to lightness, humour, sacredness and ease. Small amounts of awareness can go a long way in our human stumbling towards love. No one is perfect, much less ourselves.

How are you doing with the 3 Traits of great relationships?

Are you showing and relishing your own attractiveness, or hiding it away? Are you trying to be attractive on the outside as a compensation to feeling not so attractive inside? Are you trusting and following your true attractions and desires in all your relationships? If not, why not?

Are you in acting in alignment with your own values and dreams? Do you recognise that getting involved with someone without enough alignment will lead to suffering? What will you compromise to be loved? Why?

Is authenticity something you welcome or fear? Are you a trustable person to be with because you are in touch with yourself and willing to risk being authentic with others? Do you let love in by being vulnerable? If not, are you working on it?

……And there is a quiet 4th A – Awareness – we can all keep evolving and doing our own work to increase our awareness in growth and consciousness. This positively impacts all our relationships.

As a relationship coach, I work with couples and singles. Each has their own unique challenges and goals. But I also see struggles and patterns that are common to many people. And one I want to share with you here is what often happens inside a relationship during menopause and midlife.

There’s a lot written about how menopause affects women. That’s good, but what’s often neglected is the fact that these changes have a dramatic effect on her partner too.

It’s a confusing time for both of them – just differently.

She’s going through hormonal shifts that can make her own body feel like a stranger. He isn’t going through those changes himself, but he’s living at the effect of them. Perhaps the partner who was once a good sleeper, a high achiever, a passionate lover now has fatigue, insomnia, hot flushes, swinging moods and low libido. She’d rather read a book than make love. Physically, among other changes, the drop in oestrogen during menopause can create vaginal dryness and thinning, and sex that used to be pleasurable can become painful. Pleasure is hard to feel when pain is present.

Meanwhile he’s dealing with his own hormonal changes as testosterone reduces. He’s aging, and his own questions about vitality and performance are surfacing at exactly the same time. This isn’t one-sided.

I often see this: for fear of getting it wrong, he goes quiet. Stops initiating. She reads that as him losing interest, when it’s often the opposite.

Two people, living together, physically and emotionally withdrawn, still loving each other, but leading separate lives. She feels pressured. He feels rejected.

The Boat and the Ocean

Here’s an image I come back to again and again with the people I work with:

The feminine essence is like the ocean – vast, flowing, capable of being both gentle and stormy. During menopause, it’s more likely to be storms and hurricanes, or flat and becalmed. He, meanwhile, can feel like he’s in a little boat being tossed around by waves he didn’t create and doesn’t fully understand. And in many ways, he is.

What’s Hard to Hear

One thing I see that’s hard for a man to hear: she doesn’t want intimacy the way they used to do it. She may have been tolerating sex before, in ways she’s no longer willing to. Or she just doesn’t want it that way anymore. Menopause has a way of stripping off the veils of niceness and accommodation from the female psyche, and he may have no idea what’s hit him.

Add in the other pressures that tend to land at the same time – money, teenage kids, aging parents, career – and you’ve got two nervous systems under real stress, at the exact moment intimacy requires softness and safety.

Some couples don’t make it through this stretch intact. But many do. And I’ve watched couples come out the other side thriving, feeling closer and more connected, and with a better sex life than before.

What Couples Who Thrive Do Differently

They seek out real information and support – medical, allied health, coaching, groups – rather than bumbling around alone. There’s genuine help available on the physical side; localised oestrogen treatment, for instance, is worth raising with your GP if vaginal discomfort is part of the picture.

They also are open to learning a different way of making love – a slower, more tantric approach, sometimes called sacred sexuality or slow sex. Instead of chasing the peak of climax, which spikes and then drops away, it’s about a sustained connection where arousal builds slowly and flows through both the peaks and the valleys.

His body is also changing, in a way that can actually help here. It typically takes longer for him to reach climax as he ages, or he may have erectile issues – both of which mean more room for a couple to explore this new territory unhurried. And if penetrative sex is problematic, practices that don’t involve penetration at all are worth exploring too – see more at The Path to Sacred Sex. Slow, soothing touch, like massage, is often a gentler way in. It doesn’t need to be expert, or lead anywhere, for it to count.

The couples who thrive also learn to talk about what’s changing, and what each of them is feeling. They stay open to the process of adjustment – saying goodbye to how things were, and orienting to what’s here now. That can bring grief, anger, confusion. A real mix of what letting go feels like.

If the masculine partner can bring devotion, and informed, steady support, he becomes an anchor for her rather than another wave. She’s also being buffeted about by the waves of hormonal change she’s going through, and for many women it’s a rough ride until they work out how to be with it, and find what their body needs. She needs someone who encourages without pressuring.

Where This Can Go

Men tell me they miss what things used to be like, and wonder whether their partner will ever feel like herself again. Honestly, probably not exactly. Though things do settle post-menopause, for some women that can take years. It won’t be the same. But it can be better, deeper, richer.

His experience is just as valid as hers and needs its own space to be heard. No one is doing this on purpose to hurt the other; it’s a natural transition that effects most couples. Approached as a team, as beloveds figuring out what’s possible together, rather than focusing on what’s been lost – then menopause and midlife can bear real fruit.

I’ve written before about my own experience of sexual maturity (and more) in The True Essence of Sexual Maturity – and spoke about intimacy through menopause on The Menopause Revolution podcast.

If this is where you and your partner are right now – or you’re navigating a different struggle in your relationship – you’re not the only ones, and you don’t have to find your way through it alone. And beyond that the workshops take a couple into deeper, sacred connection, embodying their masculine and feminine essence. Then we see in relationship workshops that what goes wrong can come right.

Men and women come to the Living Love workshops for many reasons. They may have relationship issues to solve, intimacy skills to learn, curiosity (and frustrations) about their opposite.

Our habitual contractions and self-protections usually come from our past experiences, in childhood or in previous relationships. Perhaps we were abandoned or our trust was broken. This can lead to personal wounding, fears and doubts. These all restrict the flow of energy and love available for yourself and others. These patterns and protections sadly create what we fear. And this keeps us stuck in painful patterns and cycles that keeps spinning.

Feminine essence

Over the years of running workshops and doing couples counselling I have found differences in mens and womens issues. Those with a more feminine essence often are more likely to have protection and wariness from past hurts and deep disappointments in relationships. She always suffers from lack of love in relationship.

In the face of betrayal or not being loved fully they start to think they are ‘too much’ or ‘not good enough.’ Or they become overly critical of the masculine as a way to distance themselves and stay ‘safe’. They claim their partner is ‘not loving them enough’ or in the ‘right way’. They unconsciously believe that by withdrawing, not being vulnerable, or numbing their feelings, they will be safer. Actually in the context of love and intimacy vulnerability is a primary energy that draws the masculine into relationship.

Masculine essence

Those with a more masculine essence can be wary of commitment, concerned about the lack of freedom in relationship. They may not yet be connected to the authentic depth of freedom and awareness inside themselves. Or they are not mature enough to have realised the freedom that comes from deep commitment and integrity, and chosen responsibility. They can be lacking confidence about their masculine energy. And wondering how to find love and support from a great woman. Or by becoming lost in the feminine, lost in their own doubt, they can become less trustable. Even becoming a ‘pleaser’ disconnected from his own core. He can even become rejecting and dismissive, withdrawing, as a means of protection. And yet he has a deep need to be loved by the feminine.

How it comes right

In the Living Love workshops the ways in which these issues. and others, are resolved is different for each person. And yet there are threads of understanding that are similar. When the feminine connects to and values her own love, feelings, intuition and her power, then she relates to the masculine in a very different way. She is sitting confidently in herself, allowing her flow of feelings and her vulnerability. Anger and tears and deep yearning may be expressed. She transforms in the workshops when she is received and heard by the masculine.

For many women to be loved and accepted by the masculine as she is is very healing. Safe to be in her feminine essence, vulnerable, alive, powerful, fiercely loving. And as she experiences the masculine meeting her, encouraging her, she expresses more of who she really is. She trusts herself and her love flows freely again.

For the masculine in the Living Love workshops he experiences the inherent freedom in his being. And how to deepen into that within commitment and responsibility. He meets the trustable masculine in himself and the other men. And so he gets a truer reflection of the nobility and power of masculine essence. From there he is able to be present more fully for the feminine, for whatever she is feeling or thinking, without losing his own centre or taking it personally. This is what she yearns for and what brings out her devotional heart.

For him here is also the relief and delight of meeting the loving feminine heart. He is directly enlivened by her open feminine energy. Loving feedback from her gives him the right amount of challenge and direction to adjust and deepen himself. He becomes more trustable and starts getting different responses from the feminine. He experiences polarity with the feminine that is wild and free, with deep integrity.

Balance of safety and risk

The practices, talks and sharings in the workshops are layered to allow his and her core essence to be strengthened, and for the centre of an issue to reveal itself. A skilful balance of safety and risk creates real transformation, more love and deeper connection, more playfulness too. Problems are approached with creativity and heart to reveal a couples true love and intimacy.

with love

Maybe you are defaulting to a dinner out or picking up some last-minute roses, or doing nothing at all if you’d rather avoid it. I know for some people it can too commercial, or a painful time, but it’s also an opportunity to build deeper, sacred sexy loving with your partner or with yourself. How can you have a deeper and sexier Valentines Day?

One man I know told me he is planning three special events over the day for his beloved: time in the morning connecting with eye-gazing and words of appreciation, a magical evening picnic in nature, and a lush-scented bath time when kids are asleep… these are things he knows she longs for.

I love this idea of building up anticipation from morning until late in the evening, the whole day is then opened up and more deeply felt. And sexier. As many people are working and have children, breaking it up is a great way to fit Valentines Day around family life.

If you are single, it’s perfect to honour your own generous heart and love energy. Treating a friend and sharing deeply, doing something very nourishing for yourself, or spreading love wherever you go! A single man I know sends Valentines Day messages to all his single women friends. He appreciates their beauty and their loving hearts, making them feel special on this day of love.

Valentines Day is a chance to lift us beyond the mundane, the sameness of everyday and experience the magic. It can be daunting or scary to take the initiative but it’s worth it!

It’s not about how much money we spend or the show we make.

If you are single or solo you could get together with a friend(s) and the feminine essence will enjoy romance in a fun way. Dress up because you can and celebrate love. Think about where you would like to be next Valentines Day and share it with another. Don’t give in to disappointment or discouragement as this stifles your love and freedom. Inspire and appreciate others.

If you are a couple what will bring you closer together? For real, not a Disney version. Being attuned to your beloved is essential.

Do you need a new adventure or more remembering when you met and the music you shared and special things you feel for each other? Especially if you are not in a good place, think about what will create love anyway.

What is sexier? Romantic love will touch their heart. Sacred sexy love is touching the divine. Creating a sacred space can take just a few simple touches. Meditating or dancing together before slowly making love will honour your relationship and the pleasure of being together. Or a wild night out with you two as the absolute focus is sexy. Romance is a great beginning to flow into sexual intimacy, not as an expectation but as natural opening.

What shows you’ve been listening, paying attention? If they love foot massage you can include that, if they adore blue cheese get that, or fulfilling a sexual fantasy. Why not go for it? Perfection is not required – it’s your intention that counts.

Take a moment to reflect on why you would put in the effort on Valentines Day? Is it because love matters to you, sexiness matters to you, and sacred relationship matters to you?

Now let’s get creative and see what we each can do.

Don’t wait to Love,

Comparing it to ordinary sex is like comparing junk food with gourmet. But many of us are not shown the path to sacred sex, or we think it’s not for ordinary relationships. We can make it more complicated than it needs to be.

Sacred sex, or tantric sex, is a deeply connected, relaxed, and beautiful experience. Imagine embracing the waves of sexual energy – both the highs and the lows – enjoying the “valleys” that ebb and flow instead of focusing solely on building up and up to the “peaks” of orgasm, ejaculation and release. This approach nurtures deep connection, more pleasure and brings joy and energy into everyday life.

Non-goal-oriented sex offers an antidote to the unrealistic expectations fostered by society’s performance-driven intimacy. By being present, sensitive to touch, and open to love, sacred sexuality deepens the bond with a partner. It also invites you to ride the waves of divine energy and immerse yourself in the present moment.

On the sacred sex journey you may experience multiple or whole-body orgasms, explore fantasies and kinks, and express a range of energies, from gentle and sweet to ravishing and wild. You can sense the divine in this form of lovemaking, and it deeply improves intimate relationships. Connection is the central most important thing in sacred sexuality.

In my research and experience, sex and love can bring up strong feelings and experiences. Not all are pleasurable, and old wounds and insecurities can arise. Sacred sexuality integrates all aspects of being—love and presence, emotions, sensations and vulnerabilities. By slowing down, being authentic, breathing deeply, and taking time, we can experience tremendous pleasure, heal some past traumas, and create deep, meaningful connection. Sacred union also allows the natural polarity of masculine and feminine energies to express themselves organically.

The Path to Having Sacred Sex: Solo or Partnered

Set Aside Time: Make intentional time for lovemaking without distractions. Even if it’s once a week it will make a difference. Gourmet sex, like a gourmet meal, takes time to savour and enjoy. Also, she generally needs more time than him to get fully aroused.

Create a Sacred Space: Design a beautiful, simple, sensual, private and erotic environment. Or just light a scented candle and turn off your phones if that’s all you have time to do.

Eye gazing: During lovemaking softly maintain eye contact to dissolve the sense of separateness. Come back to it again and again.

Breathe Deeply: Take some full, deep breaths occasionally to anchor yourself in the moment and spread the erotic energy through your whole body not just focused in erotic zones.

Synchronize Breathing: If partnered, gently match your breath with your partner’s and feel the oneness.

Heart Connection: Place your right hand on your partner’s heart centre and your left hand on your belly. If solo, place your hands on your own belly and heart. Breathe fully and deeply.

Go Slow: Don’t be in a rush to take it anywhere, rather let the bodies have their own wisdom. Let the energy guide you. Move slowly, then allow the passion to flow naturally. Pause often to stay connected to yourself, your partner, and the divine current.

Feelings: Welcome feelings and emotions as part of the experience, you don’t have to understand or solve them, let them be there and breathe, relax and they will move through you, opening the door to deeper pleasure and closeness.

Feedback and debrief: It’s ok to gently talk or journal about your experiences – keep it to “I” statements, they are easier to hear. We can all improve.

The Polarity of Masculine and Feminine Energies
Sacred sexuality embraces the polarity of masculine and feminine energies. The union of Presence and Love is a natural and exquisite experience.

The magnetism is expressed in many ways and this is an overview: the masculine sex centre is a positive pole (penetrative), while the feminine sex centre is a negative pole (receptive). The feminine heart centre is a positive pole (penetrative) and the masculine heart centre is a negative pole (receptive). This creates a circuit of energy.

For example, a loving and penetrative penis can awaken the feminine sexuality and send energy upward into her heart. Her awakened heart, in turn, energizes the masculine heart, completing the circuit by sending energy back to his sex centre. When both partners are attuned, this flow occurs naturally and profoundly. He enters sacred sexuality through the sex centre and she enters it through he heart.

This is why expecting the masculine to only be in the heart centre or Love, or the feminine to only be in the sex centre or Sex doesn’t work.

Reflection and Integrity
Reflect for yourself: What excites you about sacred sexuality? What fears or hesitations do you have?

As you deepen your practice of sacred sexuality, your personal power grows. It is essential to pair this growth with integrity, using these energies wisely and always in service of love.

Sacred sexuality is a journey toward profound transformation. You may need help to move in this direction, don’t be afraid to reach out to attend a workshop or do sessions.

When we first fall in love with the ‘other’ there is often a period of grace where we feel this flame naturally as a magnetic attraction, but sustaining it through the years requires learning and cultivating the art of loving. And we don’t get a lot of help for how to do that.

I often hear women say “He just wants sex and I want the emotional connection first.” Without realising that for him the emotional connection comes through sex. Both want the same thing but have different pathways to get there. No way is right or better, when they work together is the best.

The current social trend of neutrality between the sexes supports a necessary push for greater equality, but it can deny our deeper desires for feminine and masculine interplay. Imagine a culture of recognition and encouragement of both the feminine and masculine, synergistically combining our different powers to create an expansion of life and love.

However, it’s common for couples to struggle with these differences, either by resisting this interplay or by settling into a more “friend” state of being, such as being housemates or co-parenting, instead of embracing their deeper sacred polarity. Misunderstandings, past hurts, broken expectations can play a part in diminishing the flame. Here are some tips for Everyday Miracles for couples to help reorient your relationship.

Understanding and Embracing Polarity

Appreciate Your Differences: Understand that the essence of masculine and feminine brings a vital dynamic to your relationship known as magnetic polarity. These differences can fuel passion and enhance love when embraced positively. We are not the same. You don’t want him to be like a girlfriend or her to be like a mate, not really.

Support Each Other’s Needs: Recognize and support each other’s unique needs and desires. For instance, when a feminine partner supports the masculine’s need for freedom and purpose, it enriches his ability to provide and protect. Conversely, a masculine partner should support the feminine’s need for emotional expression and creativity. These are not exclusive and can change at different times in our lives, but usually we have more of one essence than the other.

Cultivating Time and Space

Make Time for Individual Growth: In our busy lives, it’s crucial for each partner to have time to nourish their own essence. Encourage and support each other to engage in activities that resonate with their nature—whether it’s time alone or with same sex groups. Or pursuing a passion. We don’t have to share everything as then we have nothing fresh to bring to the relationship. We need the treasures of our unique selves to give to the other.

Prioritize Your Relationship Wellness: Regularly commit to activities that nurture your relationship in deeper connection and intimacy, such as couple’s therapy or counselling. Making time to be alone together is necessary, even if it feels scary. This commitment can strengthen communication, and prevent misunderstandings that limit the love that flows between you. Date nights should be scheduled in and aimed to have fun, not for discussing issues or family matters. Be adventurous together.

Enhancing Connection and Intimacy

Communicate Openly: We are communicating all the time, in verbal and non-verbal ways. And some of that is less than masterful. Find out how to listen and speak and give from your heart, even when you down feel like it. This helps in expressing love and resolving conflicts. Seek to understand rather than blame and you will be surprised at what can open up between you. Vulnerable “confession” is sexy.

Engage in Sexual and Spiritual Exploration: Celebrate your union by engaging in activities that deepen your sexual and spiritual connections. This could include sexual play, tantra, meditation, or simply exploring new experiences together. The masculine tends to connect through sexual closeness and the feminine tends to connect through emotional closeness, so both are needed.

Honor and Appreciate Each Other: Regularly take time to express appreciation for each other. Celebrate both the feminine and masculine qualities in your partner, recognising the unique contributions they bring to your relationship. Spend a few minutes a day telling each other what you appreciated about each other in the last 24 hours is a good way to start. If we think it but don’t say it, it doesn’t count.

Regular Practices for a Healthy Relationship

Set Aside Quality Time: Life can get hectic, and relationships may be put on the back burner. Make a deliberate effort to set aside quality time to just be together, away from the routines of daily life. This will infuse the everyday with your unique love.

Practice Connection Rituals: Engage in rituals that foster connection, such as date nights (or days), holidays away, doing breathing exercises together, or simply holding space for each other to share thoughts and feelings without judgment. Find out what works and do more of it.

Seek Professional Guidance When Needed: Don’t hesitate to seek help through therapy or coaching to address and resolve underlying issues. This is a proactive way to maintain a healthy relationship dynamic.

By integrating these practices, couples can experience everyday miracles and keep their attraction, intimacy & love flourishing. And enhancing both their personal growth and their growth as a couple.

with love,

It generally appeals to the feminine as a sign she is loved and valued. For the masculine it can be daunting or of little value to himself, so a deeper intention will likely help him embrace it. Valentine’s Day – Beyond Romance – is that even possible?

If you are missing romance in your life, feeling unseen or unappreciated, it can feel like a craving to have it. Or you may have even shut down on wanting that or not care about it at all. But Valentine’s Day is an opportunity to go beyond romantic love into a deeper union of sacred relationships. To expand your love and freedom, whether single or in a couple.

For couples infusing deeper love into the humdrum of daily life can have real, positive effects. You can go beyond flowers and chocolates into offering your partner ‘worship’ of the divine in them and they in you. The feminine loves to be seen and appreciated as the goddess of love, see my previous blog on worshipping the feminine. And he loves to be recognised as the noble hero in her life, see my previous blog on worshipping the masculine.

If your relationship is going through a challenging time, Valentine’s Day can be a painful reminder of what is missing. Instead of ignoring it, you could write a card or celebrate it saying something like “I know things aren’t great between us right now, but I still love you and I honour your love for me.”

For some singles the day can be more challenging, a reminder of loneliness or longing for something you don’t have yet, but it doesn’t have to be. Look deeper into what you most truly want in a relationship and honour that. Look beyond romance to the union you will cherish in the future.

Some singles celebrate by appreciating a special platonic friend. And a “Galentines” gathering could be a blissful women’s evening of opening and joy.

Going deeper into love can feel awkward or scary. Valentine’s Day – Beyond Romance means we don’t have to get it “right”. We are going deeper than the personality and our identities into a recognition of life and love itself. Don’t worry about it being reciprocated. Love and presence comes back to us in some form or another.

Love
Intimacy cannot be forced; it requires letting go of fear and resistance and becoming more open and receptive. Every step in that direction is a good one and like interest in the bank it compounds! As you read these Intimacy Keys choose one or two that you want to explore first.

Vulnerability

Intimacy and closeness require vulnerability, which means inviting people we trust to see into us, and wanting to see into them. Being willing to be seen for who we truly are, including our private self, our secrets, and weaknesses, allows for real connection, love and intimacy.

This might seem too scary or exposing. Many people have painful past experiences or traumas that lead them to avoid being vulnerable at all costs, or avoid being vulnerable in some areas. E.g. “It’s ok to share about my anxiety, but not about my past”. This control is to create a sense of psychological safety. We can all fear rejection, or feeling not good enough or too much. Social norms, especially for the masculine, often reinforces the idea that vulnerability is weakness. And it should be avoided or he’ll be labelled as “sissy” or “unreliable.” For the feminine she can be labelled” too emotional”, “too sensitive”. However, in intimate relationships, vulnerability is a sign of strength. It takes courage to open ourselves up to another, especially if we have been hurt in the past or criticised.

While our fears may not disappear overnight, it is our protections that stop the flow of love and passion. We don’t need to be perfect, but rather just willing to share ourselves more authentically with others. And to not be judgemental when they are vulnerable with you. Once you have a space for this vulnerability in yourself and in your relationships , it’s so delightful to be seen and to see each other, that it is hard to go back to anything less.

This key applies to all of our close relationships.

To do: Reflect on your areas of vulnerability. What are you fearful to show to others? Who could you reveal that too? Do that as soon as possible. Start small, be aware, and make it a habit to reveal rather than hold back.

Creativity

Creativity is another important key to intimacy. Creativity in relationships involves going beyond problem-solving and the day-to-day routines to include adventure, celebration, playfulness, spark and joy. Imagine finding new and exciting ways to spend time together, such as trying out new hobbies, exploring unknown places, or creating art or music together.

For lovers, infusing creativity into sexual experiences is exciting and necessary, whether that is with new ways of expressing love, sharing fantasies, bringing toys into your sexual play or exploring sacred sexuality.

This requires you both to be open-minded and willing to learn new ways of experiencing pleasure and intimacy together. It involves letting go of preconceived ideas of what sex should be. In sacred sexuality, partners focus on the present moment and tune into their bodies and their senses. They use breathing techniques, heartfulness, and presence to deepen their sacred connection, pleasure and love.

Creativity in relationships can also happen in your communication. For example, instead of having routine conversations about work or daily tasks, break it up with more meaningful conversations that involve sharing your dreams, fears, and desires.

To Do: Have a conversation with your beloved, or a friend, where you focus on playful creativity rather than issues or problems. Read love poems to each other at night, share a sexy fantasy, create a sensual boudoir to encourage love-making. Put the phones away! Or if it’s a friend take them somewhere new that will spark both your creativity. Expand and explore.

Respect and Trust

When it comes to the Intimacy Keys, we also need respect and trust. Establishing clear boundaries and respecting them is crucial for building trust in a relationship. It helps us feel safe and secure and allows us to then explore our desires and deeper openings in a healthy and consensual way. Respect leads to trust and trust leads to letting the other person in. Not much can happen if the trust isn’t there.

Respect means being attuned to our own vulnerabilities and limitations and communicating them clearly to others. If we don’t do this we can end up with heaps of resentment. It also means being open to listening to our partner’s needs and boundaries and being willing to adjust our approach if necessary. This applies to all our relationships, and when dating and starting new relationships.

Breaking trust with a partner damages intimacy and it can take a lot of time to rebuild the trust. It can be done though, and with right actions that match the words. Coming into deeper integrity creates more intimacy, as we can relax into trusting the other. We can play more, be more adventurous, take more risks. For example, using and respecting safe words and nonverbal cues during sexual play can help partners communicate their comfort levels and open at their own pace. Finding the balance between risk and safety can be a fun and rewarding experience. It requires us to be open-minded, flexible, and willing to step outside of our comfort zones.

Ultimately, the safety risk ratio will be different for each individual and each situation. The aim is to create a safe and supportive environment of respect and trust so we can explore new and exciting experiences in our relationships.

To do: Do you need stronger boundaries to create more respect and trust, or do you need to let go more? What is the balance of safety and risk in your relationships? Talk about it with someone close to you.

Embodiment

If you really want to get close to someone, you need be in tune with your own body. This means being aware of your breath sometimes, how you’re feeling physically, and how grounded and open your body is. When we are living more in our bodies, we can sensitively respond to another. If we can’t feel ourselves in our own bodies, how can we feel another? This is why embodiment is an essential part of the Intimacy Keys.

For some people, embodiment can be challenging, especially if they are used to relying heavily on their mental or intellectual abilities. Without embodiment, we can become disconnected from our own bodies, living in a mental construct and our interactions with other people may become more superficial and unfulfilling.

Practices such as breathing exercises, meditation, yoga, tai chi, etc really support us to get grounded. Physical fitness too. Being in nature, anything where your attention is in your body. If you get can get massage from someone whoo is themselves ground dint heir body that can also help you to do the same. Many people go to sleep during massages or lie there thinking. Imagine instead following the touch with your awareness, receiving it directly into your skin and your body. If feelings arise let them be experienced and flow.

Love making and sexual intimacy is much more fulfilling when we are embodied, when we don’t reach for a quick release type of sexual encounter, rather we can enjoy being present and in contact with another person’s body. Much natural bodily wisdom emerges that can’t be known until it comes out.

To do: In this moment become aware of your body, how you are sitting or standing, what posture are you in, how relaxed is your body. Take a full breath and relax down into your lower body, your hips, thighs, legs, feet. Take a few breaths letting your energy drop down….enjoy being in you. Repeat often.

Self-care

Self-care is a simple key to intimacy, yet often neglected. To connect with others fully, we must first care for ourselves. This means basic hygiene practices, like showering and grooming, to feel confident in our own skin, and appealing to your partner. But it also means prioritizing exercise, nutrition, and sleep to maintain our physical well-being and have the energy to invest in our relationships.

Beyond basic hygiene, self-care also means taking care of our bodies through exercise, nutrition, and adequate sleep. Then we naturally have more energy and vitality to bring to our intimate relationships.

Emotional self-care is just as important. It involves taking the time to understand our own emotions, needs, and desires. It also means having our own values, interests, and passions that we pursue independently.

For example, if you enjoy dancing, you may make time for regular dance classes as a way of practicing self-care. Or if you value spirituality, you may set aside time for meditation, or nature hikes. When we take care of our emotional needs in this way, we are more likely to feel fulfilled and content in our intimate relationships. More self-care = less blame of others.

Feminine essence people often sacrifice self care for the needs of others and end up getting burnt out and losing their self identity. Masculine essence people often think self- care takes too much time, just do the minimum to get back on the mission. Both are short-term strategies that don’t go the distance.

To do: Decide where you can improve on your self-care and start. One hour a week on a new hobby or passion puts you in the zone immediately. Or book a therapist to explore yourself. what have you been putting off and why?

We and Me

When two people come together in a relationship, there’s a natural process of merging that happens. This union into “We” can be a beautiful ecstatic thing, but it can also lead to losing sight of our “Me”.

In every relationship it’s about continually finding a balance between merging with the other and maintaining our own sense of self. It’s important to hold onto our own interests, values, and boundaries, even as we merge into the togetherness of a relationship. It also means respecting our partners’ individuality and allowing them the space to pursue their own interests and passions.

Over time, too much We in a relationship can get dull and the passion can die which may lead to resentment and frustration. If you have more Me time then you look outwards and have some treasures of yourself to keep bringing back to the relationship, which renews it. You are then a merging of two individuals who choose to share and be close and have a spark between you.

And too much Me time is acting as if you are single while being in a relationship. Commitment to the We is essential for intimacy. If you are in a relationship you need to devote time and energy for it to flourish. You may have different ideas about the balance of We and Me and this can take some navigating to find the optimal balance. Often the feminine defaults to wanting more We time and the masculine is the opposite. Inner fears and unresolved past issues can put it out of balance too.

To do: Overall do you tend to be more We or Me in your relationships? Do you give up your sense of self too easily or do you resist merging? What can you do today to shift the balance? Take some time alone to do something just you enjoy or drop one of your solo activities and do something together?

Masculine and Feminine Polarity

The Art of Intimacy involves understanding the essence of masculine and feminine energies and the powerful polarity that can arise between them. By recognizing and appreciating our differences, we can open the door to a sacred intimacy with our partners.

The masculine essence is characterized by qualities such as strength, direction, structure, assertiveness, and a focus on achieving goals, attaining spiritual depth. The feminine essence, on the other hand, is characterized by qualities such as love, nurturing, flow, feeling, and a focus on connection.

When these two essences come together in an intimate relationship, they can create a powerful energy and dynamic that fuels the relationship. By embracing and valuing each other’s unique essence, we can ignite the polarity that exists between us and deepen our connection.

Whatever your gender as a couple, we need polarity between masculine and feminine energies to create that spark and magnetic attraction. Some people choose to activate this in lovemaking and have a different balance in other areas of their life. Others prefer to infuse their life with this polarity. It does take some skill to change and dance this interplay, and it’s very rewarding to do so.

To do: If you are wanting your partner or people in your life to show more masculine or feminine energy, then vacate some of it yourself to give them the space to do so. In the gap, the other person naturally moves to fill it.

…….

These Intimacy Keys are a beginning to a deeper, more fulfilled and intimate life. Whether you are single of partnered they will help you be more connected to yourself and to others. It really is a life-long journey – new possibilities and challenges show up as we mature and our life circumstances change.

Today however Valentine’s Day is often associated with the commercial exploitation of romance. Our expectations of what the day should be like are shaped by media and businesses keen to sell us roses, chocolates, and spa packages, and many choose to escape the whole fuss altogether. But for others the day still holds meaning. So Valentine’s Day: Embrace or Escape? It is easy to escape but there is a lot of love energy being released on this day so why not embrace and harness it, making a deeper meaning for ourselves?

Valentine’s Day is an opportunity to start or renew your sacred practice, expanding love and freedom, and to give it an upgrade for the future.

For couples you can do something uniquely loving and honouring for your partner. Even if the devotional gestures feel “artificial” because it’s a nominated day, infusing deeper love into the humdrum of life can have real, positive effects. If you don’t give a toss about it but your partner does, then you can do something special and loving for their sake, and find a way to make it your own.

If your relationship is going through a rough time, Valentine’s Day can be a painful reminder of what is missing. And, it can still be a chance to acknowledge the love that does exist, even if you are struggling. You could say something like “I know things aren’t great between us right now, but I still love you and I honour your love for me.” Celebrating your persistence in hanging in there to find more sacred love and freedom. Setting a new pattern, a restart.

For those couples who are filled with love, Valentine’s Day is a chance to surprise your beloved with something that reveals how much you care. While the masculine may not show it matters to him, he will still be touched by her effort. He likes to be recognised as the noble hero in her life, especially if her gift is flirty or sexy in nature, the gift of herself. The feminine loves to be seen and appreciated as the goddess, so if roses come with his clunky love poem attached that will be the best poem ever when it’s written about her.

For singles the day can be more challenging, a reminder of loneliness or longing for something you don’t have yet, but it doesn’t have to be. Some people choose to ignore it as a distraction (masculine especially), while others buy themselves flowers and chocolates to delight and show self-love (feminine especially). But there are other options too. A single man I know once sent Valentine’s Day texts to a few female friends, celebrating their unique beauty and love, without any romantic connotations, but to make sure they all felt special and seen. Reaching out to one or two people who would appreciate it can also be a way to feel the love within. Elevating their day and yours as well.

Some singles celebrate by taking out a special friend. And a “Galentines” gathering could be a blissful women’s evening. Others spread love on social media by posting sweet poems, grateful thanks and quotes about love. With so much negativity and fear in the world, I believe it is necessary to balance it out with sacred love that honours and transforms. Love One Another.

If you feel awkward about expressing your love, remember awkwardness isn’t a red light, it’s a sign you are about to do something valuable. Embrace the feeling, breathe, and do it anyway. Whatever arises when you express love, the light and the dark feelings, are all part of love.

And who knows that chocolate box might hold dark chocolates too, not just light ones, that take you on a deeper journey into sacred love. Valentine’s Day: Embrace or Escape? Escape if you must, embrace if you can.
