Remove one of these ingredients and it just doesn’t quite work.

An energetic pull that draws you together

1. Attraction is central to all our relationships. There is sexual attraction with our intimate partners, the spark of masculine and feminine opposites. In dating we simply want to see someone again. In friendships we like someone, we are drawn to them. At work, we have colleagues we prefer to be with, teams we want to be part of, a culture or creativity that attract us. Here we thrive. Even our pets are likable, lovable or just quirkily attractive to us.

Trying to be in an intimate relationship without attraction is a forced affair. It is a struggle that never fully goes away. There may be a huge amount of love, but if attraction is absent, it devolves more into companionship.

And I’m not just talking about physical attraction, but an energetic pull that draws you together, often in spite of physical preferences. ‘He’s not my usual type but I just want to be around him…’

Attraction in intimacy will ebb and flow over time, but how much depends on your commitment to keeping passion and love alive. As one of the 3 Traits of great relationships it is important!

Sharing core values and dreams

2. Alignment is also a major key to great relationships. If we are not sharing core values and dreams it is difficult to sustain an attraction. For example, if you are a man in your early forties and you really want to have a family, you may be extremely attracted to your girlfriend, but if she does not want children it’s not going to work. Or if you need monogamy and your partner needs an open relationship, your opposing desires for safety and freedom are not aligned.

You are pulling in opposite directions.

Or if your dream is to live and work in a cosmopolitan city, and your partner is miserable unless they are in the bush, the attraction will likely lessen under the strain of the non-alignment. Compromises can be made, but it’s not easy when they are big ones. But the plus is that you can discover new things through your partner.

In a work team, it is often more invigorating to have different points of view. But only when you are all aligned in service to a common goal or project.

Friendships can drift apart when not bound by a common interest, location, political leanings, shared sports, life-styles. Sometimes though, the heart alignment is stronger than these factors and the friendship endures all kinds of changes.

In intimate relationships an alignment of your sexual flavours and preferences makes it easier to flow together in love making. If one partner is very light and romantic and the other is more kinky and darker this can be fearful for one and boring for the other.

When we are authentic others can trust us

3. Authenticity creates trust, an essential for all good and strong relationships, intimate or otherwise. Being real and essentially yourself is being authentic. When we are authentic others can trust us because we do not have secrets or hidden motives. We are not projecting false identities over our true essence, or manipulating to get love and attention. We are vulnerable in the best kind of way.

If we commit to another from our authentic selves we will naturally keep our commitments and follow through. This builds the trust, which creates a container for attraction and love to grow and flourish. Authenticity is not about forcing our ‘truth’ onto another or being ‘honest’ in a way that hurts others unnecessarily. It is being true to ourselves and living love to others.

Authenticity is exciting, an aphrodisiac. It can bring back lost attraction or make it very clear if its not going to work.

If you are not able to be your authentic self in a relationship that is not healthy and needs to change.

Small amounts of awareness can go a long way

And there is a 4th A, the overarching aspect of Awareness. Connecting to lightness, humour, sacredness and ease. Small amounts of awareness can go a long way in our human stumbling towards love. No one is perfect, much less ourselves.

How are you doing with the 3 Traits of great relationships?

Are you showing and relishing your own attractiveness, or hiding it away? Are you trying to be attractive on the outside as a compensation to feeling not so attractive inside? Are you trusting and following your true attractions and desires in all your relationships? If not, why not?

Are you in acting in alignment with your own values and dreams? Do you recognise that getting involved with someone without enough alignment will lead to suffering? What will you compromise to be loved? Why?

Is authenticity something you welcome or fear? Are you a trustable person to be with because you are in touch with yourself and willing to risk being authentic with others? Do you let love in by being vulnerable? If not, are you working on it?

……And there is a quiet 4th A – Awareness – we can all keep evolving and doing our own work to increase our awareness in growth and consciousness. This positively impacts all our relationships.

Comparing it to ordinary sex is like comparing junk food with gourmet. But many of us are not shown the path to sacred sex, or we think it’s not for ordinary relationships. We can make it more complicated than it needs to be.

Sacred sex, or tantric sex, is a deeply connected, relaxed, and beautiful experience. Imagine embracing the waves of sexual energy – both the highs and the lows – enjoying the “valleys” that ebb and flow instead of focusing solely on building up and up to the “peaks” of orgasm, ejaculation and release. This approach nurtures deep connection, more pleasure and brings joy and energy into everyday life.

Non-goal-oriented sex offers an antidote to the unrealistic expectations fostered by society’s performance-driven intimacy. By being present, sensitive to touch, and open to love, sacred sexuality deepens the bond with a partner. It also invites you to ride the waves of divine energy and immerse yourself in the present moment.

On the sacred sex journey you may experience multiple or whole-body orgasms, explore fantasies and kinks, and express a range of energies, from gentle and sweet to ravishing and wild. You can sense the divine in this form of lovemaking, and it deeply improves intimate relationships. Connection is the central most important thing in sacred sexuality.

In my research and experience, sex and love can bring up strong feelings and experiences. Not all are pleasurable, and old wounds and insecurities can arise. Sacred sexuality integrates all aspects of being—love and presence, emotions, sensations and vulnerabilities. By slowing down, being authentic, breathing deeply, and taking time, we can experience tremendous pleasure, heal some past traumas, and create deep, meaningful connection. Sacred union also allows the natural polarity of masculine and feminine energies to express themselves organically.

The Path to Having Sacred Sex: Solo or Partnered

Set Aside Time: Make intentional time for lovemaking without distractions. Even if it’s once a week it will make a difference. Gourmet sex, like a gourmet meal, takes time to savour and enjoy. Also, she generally needs more time than him to get fully aroused.

Create a Sacred Space: Design a beautiful, simple, sensual, private and erotic environment. Or just light a scented candle and turn off your phones if that’s all you have time to do.

Eye gazing: During lovemaking softly maintain eye contact to dissolve the sense of separateness. Come back to it again and again.

Breathe Deeply: Take some full, deep breaths occasionally to anchor yourself in the moment and spread the erotic energy through your whole body not just focused in erotic zones.

Synchronize Breathing: If partnered, gently match your breath with your partner’s and feel the oneness.

Heart Connection: Place your right hand on your partner’s heart centre and your left hand on your belly. If solo, place your hands on your own belly and heart. Breathe fully and deeply.

Go Slow: Don’t be in a rush to take it anywhere, rather let the bodies have their own wisdom. Let the energy guide you. Move slowly, then allow the passion to flow naturally. Pause often to stay connected to yourself, your partner, and the divine current.

Feelings: Welcome feelings and emotions as part of the experience, you don’t have to understand or solve them, let them be there and breathe, relax and they will move through you, opening the door to deeper pleasure and closeness.

Feedback and debrief: It’s ok to gently talk or journal about your experiences – keep it to “I” statements, they are easier to hear. We can all improve.

The Polarity of Masculine and Feminine Energies
Sacred sexuality embraces the polarity of masculine and feminine energies. The union of Presence and Love is a natural and exquisite experience.

The magnetism is expressed in many ways and this is an overview: the masculine sex centre is a positive pole (penetrative), while the feminine sex centre is a negative pole (receptive). The feminine heart centre is a positive pole (penetrative) and the masculine heart centre is a negative pole (receptive). This creates a circuit of energy.

For example, a loving and penetrative penis can awaken the feminine sexuality and send energy upward into her heart. Her awakened heart, in turn, energizes the masculine heart, completing the circuit by sending energy back to his sex centre. When both partners are attuned, this flow occurs naturally and profoundly. He enters sacred sexuality through the sex centre and she enters it through he heart.

This is why expecting the masculine to only be in the heart centre or Love, or the feminine to only be in the sex centre or Sex doesn’t work.

Reflection and Integrity
Reflect for yourself: What excites you about sacred sexuality? What fears or hesitations do you have?

As you deepen your practice of sacred sexuality, your personal power grows. It is essential to pair this growth with integrity, using these energies wisely and always in service of love.

Sacred sexuality is a journey toward profound transformation. You may need help to move in this direction, don’t be afraid to reach out to attend a workshop or do sessions.

When we first fall in love with the ‘other’ there is often a period of grace where we feel this flame naturally as a magnetic attraction, but sustaining it through the years requires learning and cultivating the art of loving. And we don’t get a lot of help for how to do that.

I often hear women say “He just wants sex and I want the emotional connection first.” Without realising that for him the emotional connection comes through sex. Both want the same thing but have different pathways to get there. No way is right or better, when they work together is the best.

The current social trend of neutrality between the sexes supports a necessary push for greater equality, but it can deny our deeper desires for feminine and masculine interplay. Imagine a culture of recognition and encouragement of both the feminine and masculine, synergistically combining our different powers to create an expansion of life and love.

However, it’s common for couples to struggle with these differences, either by resisting this interplay or by settling into a more “friend” state of being, such as being housemates or co-parenting, instead of embracing their deeper sacred polarity. Misunderstandings, past hurts, broken expectations can play a part in diminishing the flame. Here are some tips for Everyday Miracles for couples to help reorient your relationship.

Understanding and Embracing Polarity

Appreciate Your Differences: Understand that the essence of masculine and feminine brings a vital dynamic to your relationship known as magnetic polarity. These differences can fuel passion and enhance love when embraced positively. We are not the same. You don’t want him to be like a girlfriend or her to be like a mate, not really.

Support Each Other’s Needs: Recognize and support each other’s unique needs and desires. For instance, when a feminine partner supports the masculine’s need for freedom and purpose, it enriches his ability to provide and protect. Conversely, a masculine partner should support the feminine’s need for emotional expression and creativity. These are not exclusive and can change at different times in our lives, but usually we have more of one essence than the other.

Cultivating Time and Space

Make Time for Individual Growth: In our busy lives, it’s crucial for each partner to have time to nourish their own essence. Encourage and support each other to engage in activities that resonate with their nature—whether it’s time alone or with same sex groups. Or pursuing a passion. We don’t have to share everything as then we have nothing fresh to bring to the relationship. We need the treasures of our unique selves to give to the other.

Prioritize Your Relationship Wellness: Regularly commit to activities that nurture your relationship in deeper connection and intimacy, such as couple’s therapy or counselling. Making time to be alone together is necessary, even if it feels scary. This commitment can strengthen communication, and prevent misunderstandings that limit the love that flows between you. Date nights should be scheduled in and aimed to have fun, not for discussing issues or family matters. Be adventurous together.

Enhancing Connection and Intimacy

Communicate Openly: We are communicating all the time, in verbal and non-verbal ways. And some of that is less than masterful. Find out how to listen and speak and give from your heart, even when you down feel like it. This helps in expressing love and resolving conflicts. Seek to understand rather than blame and you will be surprised at what can open up between you. Vulnerable “confession” is sexy.

Engage in Sexual and Spiritual Exploration: Celebrate your union by engaging in activities that deepen your sexual and spiritual connections. This could include sexual play, tantra, meditation, or simply exploring new experiences together. The masculine tends to connect through sexual closeness and the feminine tends to connect through emotional closeness, so both are needed.

Honor and Appreciate Each Other: Regularly take time to express appreciation for each other. Celebrate both the feminine and masculine qualities in your partner, recognising the unique contributions they bring to your relationship. Spend a few minutes a day telling each other what you appreciated about each other in the last 24 hours is a good way to start. If we think it but don’t say it, it doesn’t count.

Regular Practices for a Healthy Relationship

Set Aside Quality Time: Life can get hectic, and relationships may be put on the back burner. Make a deliberate effort to set aside quality time to just be together, away from the routines of daily life. This will infuse the everyday with your unique love.

Practice Connection Rituals: Engage in rituals that foster connection, such as date nights (or days), holidays away, doing breathing exercises together, or simply holding space for each other to share thoughts and feelings without judgment. Find out what works and do more of it.

Seek Professional Guidance When Needed: Don’t hesitate to seek help through therapy or coaching to address and resolve underlying issues. This is a proactive way to maintain a healthy relationship dynamic.

By integrating these practices, couples can experience everyday miracles and keep their attraction, intimacy & love flourishing. And enhancing both their personal growth and their growth as a couple.

with love,

Intimacy cannot be forced; it requires letting go of fear and resistance and becoming more open and receptive. Every step in that direction is a good one and like interest in the bank it compounds! As you read these Intimacy Keys choose one or two that you want to explore first.

Vulnerability

Intimacy and closeness require vulnerability, which means inviting people we trust to see into us, and wanting to see into them. Being willing to be seen for who we truly are, including our private self, our secrets, and weaknesses, allows for real connection, love and intimacy.

This might seem too scary or exposing. Many people have painful past experiences or traumas that lead them to avoid being vulnerable at all costs, or avoid being vulnerable in some areas. E.g. “It’s ok to share about my anxiety, but not about my past”. This control is to create a sense of psychological safety. We can all fear rejection, or feeling not good enough or too much. Social norms, especially for the masculine, often reinforces the idea that vulnerability is weakness. And it should be avoided or he’ll be labelled as “sissy” or “unreliable.” For the feminine she can be labelled” too emotional”, “too sensitive”. However, in intimate relationships, vulnerability is a sign of strength. It takes courage to open ourselves up to another, especially if we have been hurt in the past or criticised.

While our fears may not disappear overnight, it is our protections that stop the flow of love and passion. We don’t need to be perfect, but rather just willing to share ourselves more authentically with others. And to not be judgemental when they are vulnerable with you. Once you have a space for this vulnerability in yourself and in your relationships , it’s so delightful to be seen and to see each other, that it is hard to go back to anything less.

This key applies to all of our close relationships.

To do: Reflect on your areas of vulnerability. What are you fearful to show to others? Who could you reveal that too? Do that as soon as possible. Start small, be aware, and make it a habit to reveal rather than hold back.

Creativity

Creativity is another important key to intimacy. Creativity in relationships involves going beyond problem-solving and the day-to-day routines to include adventure, celebration, playfulness, spark and joy. Imagine finding new and exciting ways to spend time together, such as trying out new hobbies, exploring unknown places, or creating art or music together.

For lovers, infusing creativity into sexual experiences is exciting and necessary, whether that is with new ways of expressing love, sharing fantasies, bringing toys into your sexual play or exploring sacred sexuality.

This requires you both to be open-minded and willing to learn new ways of experiencing pleasure and intimacy together. It involves letting go of preconceived ideas of what sex should be. In sacred sexuality, partners focus on the present moment and tune into their bodies and their senses. They use breathing techniques, heartfulness, and presence to deepen their sacred connection, pleasure and love.

Creativity in relationships can also happen in your communication. For example, instead of having routine conversations about work or daily tasks, break it up with more meaningful conversations that involve sharing your dreams, fears, and desires.

To Do: Have a conversation with your beloved, or a friend, where you focus on playful creativity rather than issues or problems. Read love poems to each other at night, share a sexy fantasy, create a sensual boudoir to encourage love-making. Put the phones away! Or if it’s a friend take them somewhere new that will spark both your creativity. Expand and explore.

Respect and Trust

When it comes to the Intimacy Keys, we also need respect and trust. Establishing clear boundaries and respecting them is crucial for building trust in a relationship. It helps us feel safe and secure and allows us to then explore our desires and deeper openings in a healthy and consensual way. Respect leads to trust and trust leads to letting the other person in. Not much can happen if the trust isn’t there.

Respect means being attuned to our own vulnerabilities and limitations and communicating them clearly to others. If we don’t do this we can end up with heaps of resentment. It also means being open to listening to our partner’s needs and boundaries and being willing to adjust our approach if necessary. This applies to all our relationships, and when dating and starting new relationships.

Breaking trust with a partner damages intimacy and it can take a lot of time to rebuild the trust. It can be done though, and with right actions that match the words. Coming into deeper integrity creates more intimacy, as we can relax into trusting the other. We can play more, be more adventurous, take more risks. For example, using and respecting safe words and nonverbal cues during sexual play can help partners communicate their comfort levels and open at their own pace. Finding the balance between risk and safety can be a fun and rewarding experience. It requires us to be open-minded, flexible, and willing to step outside of our comfort zones.

Ultimately, the safety risk ratio will be different for each individual and each situation. The aim is to create a safe and supportive environment of respect and trust so we can explore new and exciting experiences in our relationships.

To do: Do you need stronger boundaries to create more respect and trust, or do you need to let go more? What is the balance of safety and risk in your relationships? Talk about it with someone close to you.

Embodiment

If you really want to get close to someone, you need be in tune with your own body. This means being aware of your breath sometimes, how you’re feeling physically, and how grounded and open your body is. When we are living more in our bodies, we can sensitively respond to another. If we can’t feel ourselves in our own bodies, how can we feel another? This is why embodiment is an essential part of the Intimacy Keys.

For some people, embodiment can be challenging, especially if they are used to relying heavily on their mental or intellectual abilities. Without embodiment, we can become disconnected from our own bodies, living in a mental construct and our interactions with other people may become more superficial and unfulfilling.

Practices such as breathing exercises, meditation, yoga, tai chi, etc really support us to get grounded. Physical fitness too. Being in nature, anything where your attention is in your body. If you get can get massage from someone whoo is themselves ground dint heir body that can also help you to do the same. Many people go to sleep during massages or lie there thinking. Imagine instead following the touch with your awareness, receiving it directly into your skin and your body. If feelings arise let them be experienced and flow.

Love making and sexual intimacy is much more fulfilling when we are embodied, when we don’t reach for a quick release type of sexual encounter, rather we can enjoy being present and in contact with another person’s body. Much natural bodily wisdom emerges that can’t be known until it comes out.

To do: In this moment become aware of your body, how you are sitting or standing, what posture are you in, how relaxed is your body. Take a full breath and relax down into your lower body, your hips, thighs, legs, feet. Take a few breaths letting your energy drop down….enjoy being in you. Repeat often.

Self-care

Self-care is a simple key to intimacy, yet often neglected. To connect with others fully, we must first care for ourselves. This means basic hygiene practices, like showering and grooming, to feel confident in our own skin, and appealing to your partner. But it also means prioritizing exercise, nutrition, and sleep to maintain our physical well-being and have the energy to invest in our relationships.

Beyond basic hygiene, self-care also means taking care of our bodies through exercise, nutrition, and adequate sleep. Then we naturally have more energy and vitality to bring to our intimate relationships.

Emotional self-care is just as important. It involves taking the time to understand our own emotions, needs, and desires. It also means having our own values, interests, and passions that we pursue independently.

For example, if you enjoy dancing, you may make time for regular dance classes as a way of practicing self-care. Or if you value spirituality, you may set aside time for meditation, or nature hikes. When we take care of our emotional needs in this way, we are more likely to feel fulfilled and content in our intimate relationships. More self-care = less blame of others.

Feminine essence people often sacrifice self care for the needs of others and end up getting burnt out and losing their self identity. Masculine essence people often think self- care takes too much time, just do the minimum to get back on the mission. Both are short-term strategies that don’t go the distance.

To do: Decide where you can improve on your self-care and start. One hour a week on a new hobby or passion puts you in the zone immediately. Or book a therapist to explore yourself. what have you been putting off and why?

We and Me

When two people come together in a relationship, there’s a natural process of merging that happens. This union into “We” can be a beautiful ecstatic thing, but it can also lead to losing sight of our “Me”.

In every relationship it’s about continually finding a balance between merging with the other and maintaining our own sense of self. It’s important to hold onto our own interests, values, and boundaries, even as we merge into the togetherness of a relationship. It also means respecting our partners’ individuality and allowing them the space to pursue their own interests and passions.

Over time, too much We in a relationship can get dull and the passion can die which may lead to resentment and frustration. If you have more Me time then you look outwards and have some treasures of yourself to keep bringing back to the relationship, which renews it. You are then a merging of two individuals who choose to share and be close and have a spark between you.

And too much Me time is acting as if you are single while being in a relationship. Commitment to the We is essential for intimacy. If you are in a relationship you need to devote time and energy for it to flourish. You may have different ideas about the balance of We and Me and this can take some navigating to find the optimal balance. Often the feminine defaults to wanting more We time and the masculine is the opposite. Inner fears and unresolved past issues can put it out of balance too.

To do: Overall do you tend to be more We or Me in your relationships? Do you give up your sense of self too easily or do you resist merging? What can you do today to shift the balance? Take some time alone to do something just you enjoy or drop one of your solo activities and do something together?

Masculine and Feminine Polarity

The Art of Intimacy involves understanding the essence of masculine and feminine energies and the powerful polarity that can arise between them. By recognizing and appreciating our differences, we can open the door to a sacred intimacy with our partners.

The masculine essence is characterized by qualities such as strength, direction, structure, assertiveness, and a focus on achieving goals, attaining spiritual depth. The feminine essence, on the other hand, is characterized by qualities such as love, nurturing, flow, feeling, and a focus on connection.

When these two essences come together in an intimate relationship, they can create a powerful energy and dynamic that fuels the relationship. By embracing and valuing each other’s unique essence, we can ignite the polarity that exists between us and deepen our connection.

Whatever your gender as a couple, we need polarity between masculine and feminine energies to create that spark and magnetic attraction. Some people choose to activate this in lovemaking and have a different balance in other areas of their life. Others prefer to infuse their life with this polarity. It does take some skill to change and dance this interplay, and it’s very rewarding to do so.

To do: If you are wanting your partner or people in your life to show more masculine or feminine energy, then vacate some of it yourself to give them the space to do so. In the gap, the other person naturally moves to fill it.

…….

These Intimacy Keys are a beginning to a deeper, more fulfilled and intimate life. Whether you are single of partnered they will help you be more connected to yourself and to others. It really is a life-long journey – new possibilities and challenges show up as we mature and our life circumstances change.

These and more are explored and developed in my work with couples and singles, both in the Direct Path to Love & Intimacy sessions and the Attraction Intimacy & Love Workshops.

Do you feel love but not attraction for your partner?

Are you dating people who want you to be their friend but not their lover?

Many of us are taught that it is good to be kind, caring, supportive and helpful in relationships. We are not told that this can kill off sexual spark and attraction. Caring is parental mode, being in mother and father energy. And the child receives. Now there are times when it’s great to be caring towards your beloved or your date partners. You can do this as needed. But if you want to have erotic attraction and spark it’s not about caring, it’s about desire. Being so caring isn’t so sexy.

Caretaking someone else’s feelings it is not erotic or romantic. If you are feeling obligated to take care of their feelings, it will diminish your desire to open to them sexually or to initiate sexually. If you or your partner become needy for approval or for the other to take care of uncomfortable feelings like rejection, then you are not standing fully in yourself and desiring the other.

“I love you” and “I want you” are powerful statements. When they become “I love you, do you love me?” and “I want you, do you want me?’ it asks for a caring act rather than an act of passion. You may want to make them feel better, but are turned off sexually, you are in mother/father mode or rescuing mode, not in the ravishing mode.

If by necessity you are physically caring for your partner, then it’s important to be able to switch that off and experience desire. It is possible to shift out of that mode, shake it off and have dedicated time where you experience each other as lovers. Whether that is through a ritual that marks the change, a special time of day, a change of clothes, a little signal you have. Dressing up for dinner changes the dynamic. One couple I know where he is her physical carer find that when they go away somewhere different, even overnight, they are able to reexperience desire and romance. Openly wanting someone and not needing them to make you feel better can be healing in itself and takes care of many problems.

If you are dating, it’s great to be responsive to the other person’s needs but not to feel compulsive about fulfilling them. You don’t want them to see you as the carer, the friend who looks after them, you want them to see you as a sexy attractive lover, who can also be caring and kind.

Especially in the masculine/feminine dynamic if she senses he needs her approval to feel ok about himself, then she is being forced to relate to the insecure boy rather than the desiring man. If she is overly caring he will experience her as a friend or a mother, not as the alluring sex goddess that he is going to have to step up to meet. And in reverse if he is overly caring she can start to feel like a child. She generally wants to be cared for and cherished, but as an attractive woman not as a little girl.

Of course, I’m not suggesting being uncaring or unkind or insensitive. Being loving is the foundation for relationship. However, I do see many couples where the love is there, but the desire is absent. That need to have the other caretake for them, or being compulsive about caring, really diminishes the sexual intimacy and activity. To bring back the spark, or to find the passion, dial down the caring and dial up the desire. If you find that difficult to do there may be a deeper pattern that is stopping you, and that may require some extra therapeutic support.

Being so caring isn’t so sexy. Remember that next time you are quietly demanding your partner or date makes you feel good about yourself, alleviates your anxiety or you are rushing to do the same for them.

Love

Many of us do, and yet it isn’t always how we feel or what is happening. Attraction wanes, sex dies off, our spark is squished. How to create (and keep) attraction alive eludes us a lot of the time.

When attraction works it’s a circular energy. Someone finds you attractive and desirable and then you feel more that way, you radiate and glow in the feminine, and feel more confident and stronger in the masculine.

In reverse, if your partner isn’t particularly turned on by you anymore, you can start to feel and be less attractive. For singles if they aren’t getting attention either online or in real life they can start to contract and then they receive even less attention.

It’s a natural downhill slide. How to interrupt that free-fall and let go into love instead?

1. Stand in your own essence and cultivate it.

Attraction happens when two opposite energies come together, the masculine and feminine essence, whether that’s in men or women. This can be a purely sexual attraction, but it is so much richer and more sacred when the attraction is to body, mind and spirit. We need to nurture and deepen our own essence. Be as alive, healthy and vital as you can be. And bring that to our relationships, over and over.

2. Trust that to attract others, you don’t have to be the same.

Becoming too much in the friend zone or the parenting zone with a partner doesn’t work to create or keep attraction. Friendship and trust are essential, but we need erotic mystery and differences to feel that magnetic zing and have deep union. It is not about ‘type’ or body shape, it’s about energy. We have preferences but they can fly out the window when we feel that attractive pull to the other. We can be equal and different. Be sensitive to, and open to, even worshipping our opposite.

3. Look for where the polarity is moment to moment in your relationship or date.

If things are feeling a bit flat or neutral, then what can you do in that moment? Pull back and leave a gap for the masculine to stand in? Offer appreciation to the feminine? Have humour, mystery, playfulness. Stop being rational or going on with dull talking. Be brave and try new things.

4. Take either a surrender role or a direction role

To have strong attraction one person needs to be either the ‘ravisher’ or be ‘ravished’. Let yourself go and trust one or the other and see what happens. Most people have a preference and it’s fun to play with this and swop it up a bit too. Can be while making love or on a coffee date.

5. Create endings and beginnings.

End the daily stuff and start the exciting stuff with a ritual, a poem, a look, a dress-up. Be bold, fearless. Activate the attraction regularly, don’t rely on it just happening as it takes skill and art to create and keep polarity.

…….

We will be exploring and activating this in the Evening Workshop ‘How to Create (and keep) Attraction. Or both?

Romantic love was an invention of courtly England in the 16th century when knights used it to woo the unattainable princess. It was an ideal of unrequited love that sparked minstrel serenades full of longing for the fair beloved, romantic poems and the code of chivalry.

Today romance is often used to woo the desired other in the beginning courtship phase of a relationship . For the primal masculine he is ‘hunting’ and wants to make her ‘his’. Romance is a necessary endeavor to reach this goal.

But if you have been married or in a long relationship you learn that once the honeymoon romantic phase is over, usually in six to eighteen months, the romance drops off.

I remember feeling a little shocked but getting it when a male client once admitted, a little sheepishly, why he had quit with the flowers and the special dinners. He has got her now, he burst out with. They were married and had children together, the job is done, so why keep up the hard work of romance? I thought about his wife and her desperate longing for romantic appreciation. The job wasn’t done. Now how to get him to see that?

The feminine essence tends to enjoy romance more than the masculine essence. Being made to feel special, adored and valued by words and actions of love allows her to surrender into her feminine essence, to flow freely, to be more sure of herself. It kind of tickles a part of the feminine that gives her life a little more shine.

It can also be a reset button on her love. She opens her heart and remembers why she chose him as her partner. And it is a win-win as he is gratified to see her radiance blooming open when she sees the flowers in the bath, when she receives his little gifts, enjoys the date night he organises. (Hint – don’t get in the bath with her unless invited.)

However, many men in relationships tell me that when they try to be romantic, their partner resists or criticises his attempts. Her heart is closed to him. This is sometimes because she is caught up in the dis-attraction that happens after the honeymoon phase. Or she sees his romancing as really foreplay to get sex, rather than purely for love of her. He, on the other hand is wondering why they don’t have sex anymore, and is really frustrated and longing for intimacy. And for the masculine essence, sexual intimacy is often his way towards deeper love.

The key for him is to persist with his romantic offerings without an agenda for sex. Most likely, over time, she will trust him and open her heart again to enjoying romantic moments with him. This flows into the whole relationship, including sexual connection. For her, a key is to not get addicted to romance and see it as essential to her love. As a woman recently told me, it took her a while to realise that mending her window latches was how her husband showed his romantic interest.

Romantic offerings to the masculine essence is not about the flowers, the shine or the bubbles. He does likes to be made to feel special and reminded of your love. He will appreciate words or notes of gratitude showing how you feel about what he does for you, giving him a gift of an experience that matches his interests, offering physical affection like holding hands in public, a foot massage, dressing up in clothes he loves to see you in, romantic sex.

Going deeper

Importantly, let’s not mistake romance for love, passion and trust. After the romantic honeymoon phase of a relationship is over, then it really is about going deeper into love and evolving together. And in fact, often many of the things we find adorable in the honeymoon phase, are now the traits we find most irritating, or even repulsive. His silence was so profound, but now it is boring. Her wild laughter was exciting and now it seems deranged. The cute habit he has of snuffling in his sleep, now it is a sign of self-neglect and almost grounds for divorce.

There are many relationships that end when the honeymoon is over and people go looking for the next romantic infatuation. Instead of leaving, in nearly all cases, the end of the honeymoon phase is a good time to stay, to work through the limitations and conflicts to drop into a deeper layer of connection, sexuality and intimacy. Occasionally it reveals an incompatible relationship and should end, but usually it’s the opportunity to move from romantic love to tantric love.

Tantric love includes all kinds of unromantic bodily functions and harsher realities. The underbelly of romance is shame. In the courtly romantic mode is the concept of woman as pure, perfect, untainted, delicate, unreachable. And the man is cast in the role of rejected suitor.

In my experience working with women from many cultures, there is a tendency for women to feel shame, even disgust, about their bodies. Factually, women bleed and discharge from their vaginas, leak milk from breasts when feeding babies, excrete urine and faeces, get wet with arousal and some women ejaculate large amounts of fluid during sex. It is very ‘unromantic’.

Have you ever noticed that when you make love fully all these things seem less important? If you are revelling in desire, you care little about bodily fluids, in fact it can be erotic to slip and slide and sweat. Because we are moving beyond the layers of indoctrinated shame, the romantic ideal of untaintedness.

Tantra embraces it all. An American man I met many years ago in India, told me a story of one of his unforgettable initiations with a tantric master. The guru lectured him on the absolute honouring of the divine feminine shakti and he lapped it all up. He felt his adoration growing daily for his partner, who was with him. After he had performed many pujas, chanted and prayed, he was presented with a plate, decorated with flowers. In the middle of the plate was her faeces, ready for him to eat. To prove his embrace of all of Her. India of course was rife with parasites and bacteria harmful to foreigners. He told me he did the ritual….

Luckily, we don’t have to do that, but it can feel very distasteful to embrace the shadows in relationship, to let it all burn in the fire of love. It is when it feels most unromantic that a deeper fire can burn, that sweeps away separation and protections, allowing authentic vulnerabilities to emerge. Opening our hearts much wider than our irritations and preferences.

A couple can start by bringing their bodies together, lying or sitting, front to front, relaxing and breathing together, naked is best but clothed is fine. Looking into each others eyes, going beyond the day to day. This opens the energy between them. It allows the natural flow of masculine and feminine polarity to emerge. The divine energy can start to come through.

You do not need to feel romantic or even loving to do this. It is a commitment to love, trusting in the other and in the divine, willing to let go of separation and choosing oneness. There are other tantric practices and this simple one is a very good start. “One love in the two-bodied form”, as it has been called.

Choose with awareness and trust your heart

Do you need more romantic or tantric loving? Do you need romance to lighten up and make things sparkle and open between you, or in your own life? Or is it time for more tantric practices, more about opening to the deeper love, the recognition of the divine in the other. Both have their time and place. It is up to us to sense what’s needed to create more love and presence, to experiment and to take a risk. Once we have the tools and skills this is easier of course.

If you are in a couple there may be obstacles, history, fears to overcome. If you are solo, there may be beliefs or fears stopping you opening and deepening in your own life.

Have you got lost in the lip gloss of life? Or are you, whether single of partnered, ready to dive deeper into the mysteries of divine intimacy and love?

with love

This will supposedly lead to greater clarity, focus and a more satisfying life. If this purpose is noble and serves others, even better. It seems we must all be on a quest to find and live our purpose to make our lives meaningful. Our purpose – is it to love fully and deeply?

I too sought my life purpose, reading the books and doing the inquiry. Being of a spiritual inclination I was convinced I could find where I fitted into the puzzle of life. And there were important recognitions along the way of trusting the intuition of my higher self and valuing the gifts I bring to others. And somewhere in there the need to define my purpose dropped away as I embraced my feminine essence. Purpose was a good thing when in service to my heart.

For the feminine essence love and creativity are central to her motivation. For the masculine essence, purpose is central to his motivation. And we have both of these energies in us at times. I see many men, and an increasing number of women, feel they are a failure because they don’t have a ‘life purpose’. Or they judge that their life purpose isn’t meaningful enough, or clear enough. It’s a trap.

If you have a masculine essence

If you have a masculine essence you are most likely to have several different purposes throughout your life. Your purpose may be very different depending on your age and what stage of life you are at. When we are young adults, a large part of our purpose is looking for sexual partners and learning about life. When we are in the process of building family, career and wealth, our purpose is very different. Or when family has grown up, career goals achieved or faded away, you may want to explore more adventurous or spiritual pursuits. Your purpose will change and grow as you do.

When a person with a strong masculine essence is in the gap between a purpose coming to an end, and the new one not yet formed, this can be a very confusing time. Nothing seems clear anymore, he is in the unknown. Or he may have had an idea of a big purpose and failed to fulfil it.

Patience and discipline is required to navigate this new territory and it can literally feel like life has no value or meaning. Right now, in the pandemic, we are seeing people lose businesses overnight that they have built up for decades, jobs are disappearing, and what was once a clear purpose is lost in space.

I know how hard it can be when our beloved seems to change from a person of action and purpose, to one of indecision, doubt, inaction and even despair. It can be challenging to know how to respond to them in this space. Do you help them find their new purpose, or challenge them to find one, unhappily put up with it, or leave them until they do? None of those will support them during a period of purposelessness.

I learnt that I needed to be aware when it was my own emotions or frustration that was biting me. Sometimes for them sitting on the couch doing nothing is genuinely needed to navigate the abyss. But when they are getting lost and spiralling down into a waste land that doesn’t serve them, I need to act with authentic energetic responses, and show my love and trust to help them navigate these tricky waters.

If you are lacking purpose don’t despair and grab for something, like a life raft. You most likely need to sink into the ocean and then rise with a new purpose. Sometimes your purpose may be revealed in a flash of insight, and sometimes it will take time, or even gradually dawn on you that you are already living your purpose.

Traditional initiation rituals, such as a vision quest, were designed to help us discover our purpose. People do various forms of these today, men and women, hoping for the clarity of a unifying vision, clear direction and knowing. Sometimes that knowing may come from the paradox of finding purpose by giving up purpose.

Trying too hard to find your purpose can create a reaction that keeps it away. It’s the subtle art of intention, release and letting go. Trusted friends will know how you are doing with this, as well as your partner if you have one. Your partner will respond with devotion and patience if they see you genuinely having the intention to discover your purpose.

If you have a feminine essence

If you have a feminine essence, you may also long to have a clear life purpose. If it is a higher purpose that puts you in service to others, that is meaningful for the feminine heart. It also makes bearable all the masculine energy you need to activate to achieve the purpose. A life purpose also gives an internal certainty and structure that can help the feminine relax and flow.

However, many women and those with strong feminine essence find that they can’t connect to a deep life purpose and are wondering, ‘ Is there something wrong with me?’

This includes those who are raising small children. Our society generally doesn’t value raising children as a worthwhile purpose, a stay at home parent should be doing other things as well. I wonder what is more worthwhile than being the source of love, care and wisdom to new human beings?

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignleft wp-image-2965 " src="https://livinglove.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/IMG_1314-e1604744952152-300x230.jpg" alt="Our purpose? What if the feminine life purpose is to be just that? To remind others of the delight of life with her skin, her hair, her radiant smile, her tears, her heart, her sensuality. That she is in herself a purpose, not as something to achieve but as a living, breathing force of nature.

This understanding can always be combined with a more goal-oriented life purpose, they are not exclusive. If you are confused as to what to do in the world, how to best give your gifts, follow what energetically attracts you. That will lead you to the place where you feel fulfilled and can give your gifts to others. You may need to train or study, and work hard, but it will feel right (most of the time). Even when it is difficult there will be this inner attraction that makes sense of it all.

If you are primarily a masculine essence you will be happier with a clear life purpose, knowing this will most likely change several times during your life. If you don’t have one, it’s an opportunity to go deeper and find the next layer of your life’s commitment. Criticising yourself or comparison with other more focused men won’t help — but quiet intention will.

If you are a young man, the pressure to know your purpose, and have a form for it, can be intense. Take the freedom to organically live your life, exploring and adventuring, and discovering your deepest purpose along the way. The urgency to find THE career, specialise, get it right, and succeed is often blocking the ability to discover what is right for each person.

Whatever you are doing, do it with care and excellence and the next step will happen. If you are distracting yourself a lot, it can be a great idea to cut down on these distractions and be open to honing down into your purpose.

If you are primarily a feminine essence you don’t need a purpose in the same way as the masculine does. You will be happiest with your heart having a way to love fully and deeply, in service to others, with a wonderful freedom to express your energy and embodiment.

It won’t necessarily follow a straight line, it will probably be creatively full of curves and swirls. Enjoy!

When we are single, our purpose in life often includes finding a mate, a beloved. It is helpful to know the purpose of the relationship you are seeking. Having fun and sexual exploration? Or building a life together? Creating a family? Following spiritual paths or choosing someone you want to evolve with in the best possible way? If you and a partner are not aligned in your purpose for the relationship it can be a struggle.

Couples sometimes find that when their purpose no longer matches it is hard to stay together. If one starts to want commitment and a family and the other does not want that, then love may not be enough. Or if years of marriage and raising a family has finished, they have completed that purpose, and if one of them wants to explore and grow in alternative ways, and the other doesn’t, they may separate.

Ideally, a couple can match their love and commitment to finding new purpose and new love that nourishes and gifts others, and it usually takes time, so let’s not be in a rush to have a life purpose. Celebrate it if you have one, for now. Be ready to dig deeper when you don’t have one.

Or be content to love fully and deeply as one of the most profound purposes you could have.

Are you in alignment with your soul destiny, your purpose? Have you had a few purposes in this incarnation? What’s next for you? How do you feel about the nomenclature of masculine and feminine essence? We realise they are fluid and not gender specific but somehow we all recognise the language of masculine and feminine energies — Both vital, both equally important and both with joys and challenges. We love that the world is becoming less binary and more fluid. In praise of the dance of the masculine and feminine essence in all of us, please let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

I trust this article will support you in exploring your purpose in this challenging time.

And what teaching or information we do have is primarily misguided.

We have been told that continual intimacy, complete honesty, and sharing everything with your partner makes for great relationship. But the truth is this doesn’t necessarily lead to igniting that spark of sexual polarity and passionate devotion that makes a relationship alive.

In fact passion can be killed off in the cosy warmth of domestic life. Too much honesty can hurt another person or create conflict. And I am not advocating lying or deception here, but rather a subtle compassion as to what needs to be shared with the other. We don’t need to hear the bad stuff when it is something we can’t change, better to celebrate and appreciate the good stuff.

And talking about psychological problems together needs to be limited. It can be useful at times for trust and understanding, but it doesn’t usually create desire and attraction.

Talking too much to your partner in general can lead to boredom and taking each other for granted. Or to thinking you know everything about them. Intimacy can lead to a brother/sister type of relating. We are actually changing all the time – and mystery is exciting.

Mystery and the pull of magnetic attraction

This mystery and the pull of magnetic attraction needs to have a sense of difference to ignite. And this can be created, maintained and nurtured within modern relationships.

Celebrating the different needs and gifts of masculine and feminine essences makes a relationship much more dynamic and sexy. Accepting this as a priority may mean less time spent together in favour of more aliveness and attraction.

I see how women want their men to be like their girlfriends, then they complain they are not manly enough. Men make their women into co-workers or buddies and wonder why the goddess no longer shows up. We cannot be everything to each other, it’s just not possible, or desirable. Look to your friends, family and the wider community to fulfil some of the needs and keep the relationship as the union of masculine and feminine essences. Of course occasionally we can be all of these things to each other, but if we are depending on it all the time, it leads to frustration and disappointment, and it doesn’t have to be that way.

If you are dating and opening up to a new partner

If you are dating and opening up to a new partner, then knowing how and when to magnify your own essence as an attractive force, and how to be spiritually sexy, is a great art to learn. Don’t give everything away, take your time, and let the energy build. Hold onto yourself and your essence, after all this is what is attracting the other to you. Enjoying time apart will make you both more keen to see each other. Dress up for your dates, be comfortable to be masculine or feminine. Appreciate each other.

The Union of Masculine and Feminine is not a merger, it’s a union of opposites that can dance together as a celebration of differences. The allure is from the unknown other, not from sameness.

with love and trust,

What is most loving? What question we ask has a profound effect on our lives and relationships.

Let’s take some simple and frequent interactions between a couple. Who will put out the cat? Or plan the holidays? Who will take out the dirty rubbish? Who will wash up tonight?

Or if you are dating – ‘Who will pay for the dinner out? Or will initiate the next date? Who drives or gets picked up? Or meet there independently?’

Or if you are doing your own thing. Will I dance or watch TV? Will I focus on work now or relax?

Many of these questions used to be answered by rules and roles of gender.

Many of these questions used to be answered by rules and roles of gender. Now they tend be answered by What is equal? What is fair?

In our western culture, we are programmed to ask, ‘What is fair?’ and if something isn’t fair we can feel righteous and justified in our disapproval of it. As though we should always balance the scales. And fairness is a good thing when it comes to equal pay, or food distribution for example, but it may not be the best or right question to ask in a relationship.

If you ask the question ‘What is sexier?’ or ‘What is most loving?’ you may end up with a very different answer than ‘What is fair?’ But we want fairness, don’t we? No-one wants to be taken advantage of by the other. And yet, if you are in the realm of relationship and dating, it will be much more creative to ask, ‘What is sexier?’ Or to create a deeper safety and love bubble by asking ‘What is most loving?’

COUPLES: What is sexier? What is most loving?

Generally if you want to increase the polarity of attraction it’s best for the masculine* partner to do the jobs that will allow the feminine partner to relax, stay warm, let-go, feel protected, rather than her toughening up, doing the dirty jobs and being independent. She can usually do these things perfectly well and will do them when alone, but when she is with him, if he takes this on, she will relax into her feminine flow and radiance.

Stress is a big obstacle to feminine fulfilment.

Stress is a big obstacle to feminine fulfilment. So anything that de-stresses her, that removes a burden and a worry, will help her open up, be more radiant and alive. More orgasmic.

If you expect her to be an ‘equal’ partner in jobs, or pay her own way every time you date, you will have equality and fairness, but not polarity and attraction.

Who drives when you go out together? Do you base it on who did it last time? or is it sexier if he uses his directional abilities and ‘go’ energy to take her somewhere. He can also ask her to drive. Or perhaps its sexier for you both when she drives and he is tuning into her. However, if she is focused and navigating she will feel a tension that is totally fine but…. What is sexier?

You can also ask ‘What is more loving?’ This is a great question if you want more love, closeness and intimacy in your relating and in your life. And of a higher order than What is fair? However, love can be caring and not necessarily sexy. Is it sexy for a woman to lovingly look after her man? Possibly yes, when he is feeling low or exhausted, some nurturing will be restorative and helps him feel alive again. But too much of this maternal energy can start to diminish the polarity, he will feel her as a source of motherly love and friendship, but not necessarily as someone he sexually desires.

Being his friend, carer, mentor, therapist, guide, may be extremely loving and necessary at times, but it will be depolarizing, not sexy or creating passion and attraction. This is different from gifting him with your feminine power and energy. You may say and do things that could be shocking and wild, however they can be loving, and sexy and very unfair!!

But if the man is being fatherly, a teacher, mentor, guru, therapist, it can be very polarizing and sexy, as he is giving her wisdom and guidance and she is following and valuing that.

Him honouring her feminine power can also be sexy, but in what way? If it’s from a delight in her fullness, and the excitement of matching that, it’s sexy. If it’s from a sense of relief that she will take that role off you, it’s not sexy at all.

When she receives a bigger share of romantic gifts it’s not fair, but it’s sexier. As is her gifting him with an experience that gives him wildness and freedom. It may be reversed in your couple, just find out but by the question you ask.

If you are saying, ‘but I love all these things too!’ that’s great, but ask the question What is Sexier? What is most Loving? or also “What is deeper?’ and surrender to the answer.

DATING: What is sexier? What is most loving?

If you are a woman with a feminine essence and initiating a date with a man, this may be sexier because he wants to know you are interested in him. But if you are always initiating, after a while it may not be so sexy as he becomes the hunted and you the hunter. If he initiates, he feels the challenge of the hunter energy and this is mostly sexier to both

Generally, it is sexier for her to invite and receive and for him to initiate and penetrate, this evokes the polarity of masculine and feminine. You may find it sexy though to swop this occasionally. There is no rule. It’s up to the two of you to ask the question that will lead to the experience you want to have.

On a date, if the man plans it and takes a woman on an adventure, or is listening to her desires and m
aking them happen, that’s sexy, and loving. If he is dictating what will happen without tuning into her, it’s not sexy or loving at all. She will feel dominated and controlled, rather than seen and guided and opened.

A conversation about your relationship may be necessary, but is it sexy? If both people are staying open and sharing their true responses with love, and for her to be in her flow of vulnerability and feeling, it can be very sexy. If both are in a ‘meta’ state of awareness, self-responsibility and holding space, it can be very productive and clearing, but it won’t increase polarity at all. So, if you need to have this kind of talk, let it be messy and real. Know you may need to reestablish polarity afterwards, to reinstate the feeling of union and attraction.

SOLO

This also applies to our lives, day by day. If you are contemplating where to put your time, attention and energy, work out the right question to ask. If you want to increase your own essence, sensuality, heart-openness, purposefulness or freedom, what question do you need to ask?

It’s not an interrogation method, it’s an inquiry, a looking at and feeling into our lives, desires and choices. If we say we want a partner but then choose to stay home all the time, we probably aren’t asking the question to create the result we desire.

If we want to be more feminine but are always running masculine tasks and jobs and lists it’s not going to enhance feminine essence. Similarly, if we want to increase masculinity then choosing to often enjoy your pleasurable, flowing activities won’t work.

What is your best question?

This is not about being a martyr or a pleaser, it’s about mastery. What is your best question – What is sexier? What is most loving?

Appreciating you with love and trust,

Cynthia

*For ease I’m referring here to the masculine essence as a man, and feminine essence was a woman, however it not always gender based.
