The positive shift in Scott and Alice’s relationship was an intimate unfolding that I have been honoured to witness and guide. A couples transformational journey is unique, but there are patterns and similarities that many couples go through.

He would list the things he did to help her around the house. How he backed her in her career, and shared the parenting duties. Alice would acknowledge them briefly, but they didn’t seem of much importance to her. What she wanted was something else – to be met – and she kept pushing for it.
As Alice kept trying to get Scott to really talk to her and open up, with no real success, she eventually escalated the argument, then would shut down herself and retreat. She felt disappointed and righteous and he felt hopeless and angry. This was their usual pattern.
The Breakthrough
The breakthrough in their connection began with recognizing the patterns that had entrapped them. Both were acting out of unacknowledged fears and unmet needs that mostly began in childhood. Scott, under the surface of his withdrawal, was battling feelings of inadequacy and fear of failure, triggered by Alice’s demands for communication and connection. Alice’s insistence on talking about their issues stemmed from a deep-seated need for emotional safety and reassurance, which she was lacking in her childhood and in their relationship.
